In the third decade of December in the south and south-east of the republic in the areas of cultivation of winter crops, the temperature background was above normal by 2...8C, precipitation fell less than normal, in the west the anomaly was below normal by 2...5C and precipitation were above normal (130-300%).
Stable snow cover is observed in fields with winter crops mainly in the foothill and mountainous regions of the Almaty and Turkestan regions, there is no snow in the Zhambyl region, in places up to 1 cm, which, with a decrease in air temperature, can lead to the freezing of winter crops.
The past intensive thaws for 3-4 days in Almaty and for 2-5 days in Zhambyl and Turkestan regions can affect the winter hardiness of poorly developed winter wheat crops (in the germination and 3-leaf phases).
In the West Kazakhstan region, in the areas of winter grain crops cultivation, a stable snow cover (up to 22 cm) remains, which had a protective effect on plants with uniform distribution on the soil surface, therefore, the low temperature on the soil surface (minus 29C) was not so dangerous for overwintering.
