Kazhydromet RSE and Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing cooperation between the National Hydrometeorological Service of Kazakhstan and PIK in order to develop and implement measures to promote research and capacity development on the most important scientific issues in the field of global changes and impacts on climate, water resources, energy and sustainable development.
In addition, the Memorandum is intended to provide mutual support and active cooperation between the two countries in conducting joint research in the field of hydrometeorology, in particular, common interest in the following areas:
- Climate and hydrological modeling for the Central Asian region;
- Assessment of climate change risks for water resources in various regions of Kazakhstan, including trans-border basins;
- Assessment of the risk of extreme weather events and climate change;
- Hydrological modeling using the integrated soil and water SWIM model to assess climate impacts;
- Training in dynamic and statistical methods of scaling down the results of global circulation models and climate risk assessment;
- Verification of medium-term (up to 6 months) weather forecasts for their applicability for forecasting spring floods in Kazakhstan;
- Modeling and forecasting of the yield of major agricultural crops in Kazakhstan - for example, wheat, rice;
- Short-term internships at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
The experience of working with PIK colleagues will help the specialists of Kazhydromet RSE in the development of scientific research in the field of climatology and hydrological modeling.
