On December 21, 2023, Kazselezashchita State University awarded a medal for contribution to the mudflow safety of the country to Boris Sergeyevich Stepanov, Professor, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, employee of the Scientific research center of RSE Kazhydromet. Boris Sergeevich has been solving problems related to the origin, development and degradation of mudflows for 55 years. In 1968-1972, under the leadership and direct participation of Boris Sergeevich, devices for non-contact measurement of mudflow characteristics and methods for measuring mudflow density and water flow in mountain rivers and mudflows were developed. The theory of the existence of a mudflow mass developed by Boris Sergeevich makes it possible to calculate the characteristics of mudflows in difficult situations.
In 1982, based on the results of research, a monograph was published "The main characteristics of mudflows and mudflow masses. Measurement methods".
In 1991, based on the results of the research, the monograph "Mechanics of mudflows: Experiment, theory, calculation methods" was published.
In 2014, the monograph "Mudflow phenomena of Southeastern Kazakhstan: mudflow processes and seletechnical structures" was published.
In 2017, Boris Sergeevich took an active part in the development of the Code of Rules of the Joint Venture of the Republic of Kazakhstan 2.03-108-2017 "Designing of self-protective structures".
In recent decades, he has been actively involved in the development of methods for forecasting mudflows.
Kazhydromet congratulates Boris Sergeevich on this well-deserved award and wishes him further scientific and creative success!
