For most of the month, the territory of Kazakhstan was under the influence of cold and humid air masses. The frequent passage of cyclones and atmospheric fronts has provided excessive rainfall in most of the country. Frequent rains were observed, sometimes heavy (15-57 mm), in this regard, in many regions of the republic, the total amount of precipitation per month exceeded the norm by 2-5 times. The largest amount of precipitation for the month fell in the Almaty region at the Kamenskoye Plateau meteorological station (MS - further) (195.9 mm, with a norm of 139 mm). On some days of the month, the monthly precipitation rate fell per day, for example, on May 8, 31 mm fell on MS Atyrau per day, with a norm of 28 mm per month, 20 mm fell on MS Aktau, with a norm of 13 mm, on May 19, 27 mm fell on MS Kokshetau, with a norm of 26 mm, on MS Borovoe – 57 mm, at a rate of 34 mm, on May 26, 42 mm fell on MS Taldykorgan, at a rate of 39 mm per month, etc.
Precipitation deficit was observed in the western and northwestern regions of the country, as well as locally in Kyzylorda, Turkestan, Zhambyl regions, Ulytau, Abai and Zhetisu regions. There was no precipitation on MS Janybek (West Kazakhstan region) throughout the month.
Such rainy and inclement weather in May did little to warm up the earth and increase air temperature. And with the influx of Arctic air masses at night, the air temperature in the northern half of the country dropped to frosts of 1-5 ° C. In some parts of the country, records for minimum air temperature were even updated, for example, in Aktobe, on May 5, the air temperature was recorded at -3.6 °C, on May 6 -2.5 °C, thereby updating the record for 2000 (-2.0 °C) and 1990. (-1.8 °C), on May 20 in Aktau, the night minimum was +9.4 °C, it also turned out to be a record value for this day, the previous record was in 1997 and it was +9.6 °C, on May 26, a record was recorded in the West Kazakhstan region on MS Dzhusaly, the night minimum was +3.4°C, updating the record of 1992 - +4.0°C.
During May, such phenomena as thunderstorms, dust storms, hail, gusty winds were often observed, in some regions the wind increased to 31-41 m/s (in the Zhetisu region at the Dostyk AMS on May 11, on May 26, a wind of 41 m/s was observed).
In Astana, the average monthly air temperature was +12.3°C, which was 2.2° below normal, with a norm of +14.5°C, the lowest air temperature was recorded on May 1 and amounted to -0.2°C, and the highest air temperature was noted on May 9 and amounted to +25.8°C. 76 mm fell during the month, while the norm for the month was 33 mm, which increased the norm by 2.3 times.
