Kazhydromet RSE has launched a numerical weather forecast model Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) with a spatial resolution of 2 km for the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan using computing resources of the Supercomputer Center of the NAO Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
The project was made possible thanks to the support of the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, who initiated cooperation between the National Hydrometeorological Service and the University administration after the commissioning of the most powerful supercomputer in Central Asia.
This cooperation is a good example of cooperation between educational institutions (Al-Farabi Kazakh National University) and government agencies (RSE Kazhydromet) in the interests of developing science in Kazakhstan and improving meteorological services for the population and government agencies.
Currently, the WRF model is being automatically launched daily on the al-Farabi Kazakh National University supercomputer with the formation of forecasts of air temperature, precipitation, wind parameters and meteorological charts throughout Kazakhstan. Calculations are performed automatically, and their analysis is carried out in parallel to further improve the quality and accuracy of the model's output data.
The project is aimed at strengthening the country's hydrometeorological safety, improving the early warning system for natural hazards, as well as developing scientific and educational cooperation between the National Hydrometeorological Service and the country's leading university.
It should be noted that the introduction of the WRF model with a resolution of 2 km represents a significant step forward in the development of meteorological services in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Numerical Weather Forecast tab will be available on the official website, where all users will be able to view the results of model calculations and forecast maps throughout the country.:
