The meteorological station of the 2nd category "Zharkent" is located in the foothills of the desert-plain region of the Ili depression.
Meteorological observations here began at the end of the 19th century, but were carried out intermittently.
The meteorological site in January 1890 was located on the territory of the agricultural school. In January 1896, after a five-year break, the weather station was reopened in the city center almost on the old site. From April 1911, the weather station resumed work after a long break on the northern outskirts of the city, at the infirmary.
Since August 15, 1935, there is an entry in the journal "History of the station" that an aviation meteorological station (AMSG) of the III-category was organized at the Zharkent airport and it worked until August 1957. Then the AMSG is combined with the existing aerological station "Jarkent" of the II-category and it became known as the AC "Jarkent". The last transfer of the weather station was carried out on March 15, 1935 to the place where it is currently located.
It should be noted that this station performs the largest volume of observations. On an ongoing basis, both standard observations and the gradual introduction of new technologies are carried out. In 2008, an automatic weather station was installed on MS Zharkent. The work of ground stations makes a great contribution to the work of the hydrometeorological center and affects the quality of forecasts.
