May 2021 was unusual: at the beginning of the month with heavy rains in the south-east of Kazakhstan, in the middle of the first decade with night frosts of up to 5 degrees in most of the republic, in the third decade with abnormally high air temperatures in the northern, eastern and south-eastern regions of the country.
On May 1, in the mountainous and foothill areas of the Almaty region, with the aggravation of the atmospheric fronts of the southern cyclone, very heavy rain of 36-60 mm was observed, and more than half of the monthly norm - 52 mm (with the norm for the month of 98 mm) fell at the weather station Esik during the day.
During the month, warm air masses were often carried out on the territory of Kazakhstan from the territory of Iran and Central Asia. Thus, the peak heat in most of the country was observed on May 22-31, when the records of May last year were updated. The thermometer columns in the daytime in most parts of the Republic of Kazakhstan reached +35+38°C, and in the southern regions they even rose to +43.3°C. During this period, daily temperature records were recorded in the northern, eastern, central and southern regions. For example, in Nur-Sultan on May 24, the air temperature increased to +34.2°C, which is 0.3°C higher than the absolute daily maximum recorded last year, in Petropavlovsk on May 25, the air temperature reached +36.5°C, which is 1.7°C higher than the absolute daily maximum in May 2020, in Zhezkazgan on the same day, the air temperature was +37.9°C, which became a new daily record (+36.2°C was in May last year). In the East Kazakhstan region in Ust-Kamenogorsk on May 27, the air temperature increased to +35.1°C, which exceeded the daily maximum of last year by 10.1°C. In Kyzylorda on May 31, the air temperature reached +43.3°C, thereby updating the record for 2020 (+40.2°C).
