In memory of Valentina Petrovna Popova

on August 7, 2021, a veteran of the hydrometeorological service of Kazakhstan, Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Valentina Petrovna Popova, passed away at the age of 70.
After graduating from the Kazakh State University named after S. M. Kirov in 1974 with a degree in Land Hydrology, V. P. Popova came to work in the Hydrometeorological Service system, where she worked all her life. She was a specialist in the field of calculations of natural and anthropogenic changes in surface water resources, the development of methods for hydrological forecasts of river water content, water inflow to reservoirs and the assessment of surface water resources under conditions of anthropogenic climate change. In 1998 she defended her dissertation on the topic: "Forecasting of the water supply of the Syrdarya River tributaries within the Republic of Kazakhstan". She has published more than 35 scientific papers.
With her direct participation, methods of long-term forecasting of water inflow to the Bukhtarma, Shulba and Kapshagai reservoirs were developed; a methodology for assessing the annual resources of the river flow of Kazakhstan; a methodology for long-term forecasting of water inflow to the Vyacheslav reservoir; a scheme for the integrated use and protection of lake water resources. Valentina Petrovna was a responsible performer on the following topics: "Preparation of the state water cadastre"; "Study of the impact of climate change on water resources" and others.
She participated as an expert in the preparation of the 2nd national communication on climate change in Kazakhstan, on integrated water resources management. From 2005 to 2011, she was a member of the working group of experts of the Kazakh-Chinese Joint Commission on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Rivers.
She always generously shared her knowledge with young people, and enjoyed the respect of her colleagues.
