Side event: "The role of the hydrometeorological service in the context of climate change"

RSE "Kazhydromet" held a videoconference on the topic as part of the implementation of the roadmap of the Work Plan of the Interstate Environmental Council of the CIS member States for 2022-2023, as well as as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the National Hydrometeorological Service of Kazakhstan: "The role of the hydrometeorological service in the context of climate change".
The online event was attended by the Deputy Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization and representatives of the hydrometeorological services of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Elena Manaenkova, Deputy Secretary General of the WMO, delivered a welcoming speech at the meeting. Natalia Davletyarova, Deputy Director of the Department of Environmental Policy and Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources, made a report on behalf of the Kazakh side. Nurlan Abayev, Director of the research center of RSE "Kazhydromet", presented a report on the role of the hydrometeorological service in the conditions of climate change. Vitaly G. Salnikov, Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor of KazNU. Al-Farabi – presented a report on current trends in hydrometeorological education in Kazakhstan. The main topic of the side event was discussed by representatives of the academic circle - JSC "Institute of Geography and Water Security".

Following the meeting, the participants noted that climate change is one of the urgent global problems of our time, the National Hydrometeorological Services of the CIS, together with interested organizations, are strengthening their participation in the fight against global threats that we are already facing. It was also noted the high role of the NGMS in monitoring climate change and its assessment, which is necessary to determine the potential consequences and take adequate measures to adapt and ensure sustainable development of all countries.
