The weather in May 2022 was sharply different in the western and eastern half of Kazakhstan: cyclonic activity was observed in the west of the republic for most of the month, precipitation was observed, at times strong (two monthly norms - 42 mm fell at the Kyzan weather station in the Mangystau region on May 9 per day), gusty winds up to 23 m/s, in some areas with a dust storm. The temperature background in the western regions was relatively low.
In the east of the country, on the contrary, an area of high pressure prevailed, precipitation was practically not observed, and the air temperature reached record high values. At the beginning and at the end of the month, records of maximum air temperatures in a number of meteorological stations were updated. For example, the absolute record for this day was registered at the Semey weather station on May 27, it was +35.4 ° C (the previous record was in 1961 - +35.1 ° C).
Such temperature contrasts were also caused by the processes occurring in the middle troposphere. There was a continuous influx of cold and humid air masses from the Northern Seas to the western half of the republic, and a powerful removal of tropical air masses from the regions of Iran and the Mediterranean Sea was carried out to the eastern half of the country.
Unstable weather was observed in the northern and central regions of the country, cold weather returned after prolonged warm weather. For example, on May 5-6, fairly warm weather was observed in this region, during the day the air warmed up to +20 +26 ° C, and already during the period of May 7-8 at night the thermometer columns dropped to -1-5 ° C.
As for the south and south-east of Kazakhstan, here, due to the aggravation of atmospheric fronts, heavy rains (15-58 mm) with thunderstorms, hail, gusty winds were often observed during the month, on some days reaching 31-42 m/s. However, the temperature background remained relatively high. On some days, records for maximum air temperature were broken in a number of weather stations, for example, on May 9 at the Shardara weather station (Turkestan region), the air temperature rose to +36.0 ° C (in 2018 it was +32.5 ° C).
