In October 1932, for the first time in Kazakhstan, the Almaty Weather Bureau was created, which began drawing synoptic maps and compiling short-term weather forecasts (for one to three days). At the end of the 30s, the Almaty Weather Bureau, in addition to the department of short-term weather forecasts, included the sector of long-term weather forecasts, hydrological forecasts and agricultural meteorology.
Over the years of its existence, the Weather Bureau has repeatedly changed its composition. This is the largest prognostic center in Kazakhstan, it included prognostic departments for meteorology, hydrology, agrometeorology, the department of implementation and automation of hydrometeorological forecasts, hydrometeorological support and translation groups.
The hydrometeorological center is equipped with modern equipment and technologies, is one of the main production units of Kazhydromet, the only predictive unit that produces weather forecasts throughout the republic for the period from one day to the season. The main task facing the Hydrometeorological Center is the compilation and timely delivery to consumers of storm warnings about dangerous, natural hydrometeorological phenomena and sudden weather changes. Timely information compiled and transmitted to consumers allows not only to prevent or reduce damage from a natural phenomenon, but also to save human lives. There are prognostic units in each region of Kazakhstan, in total 100 weather forecasters are responsible for the weather in Kazakhstan.
In emergency situations, the Hydrometeorological Center performs the function of a Situational center, for making operational decisions together with hydrologists, meteorologists and environmentalists.
