The Nineteenth World Meteorological Congress, which unites 193 member States of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 22 to June 2. Sessions of the World Meteorological Congress are held every four years with the participation of all Members of the organization. The World Meteorological Congress is the highest constitutional body of the WMO. The Executive Board implements its decisions, and six regional associations are responsible for coordinating meteorological and hydrological activities.
The Kazakh delegation was headed by the Director General of the National Hydrometeorological Service of Kazakhstan, Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the WMO - Danara Alimbayeva.
This year, the Congress approved a Strategic Plan for 2024-2027 aimed at promoting the vision of the WMO that by 2030 all countries should be more resilient to the socio-economic consequences of extreme weather conditions, climate, water scarcity and other natural phenomena.
A historic decision was also the approval of a new initiative in the field of greenhouse gas monitoring in support of urgent measures to reduce emissions that contribute to temperature increases. The Congressional resolution on the establishment of a Global Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Service received the unanimous support of 193 WMO Members.
Also this year, elections of the President, Vice-Presidents of the WMO, members of the Executive Council and the Secretary General will be held within the framework of the Congress.
