On June 13-14, 2023, Tashkent, Uzbekistan hosted the opening meeting of the Steering Committee of the Regional Program "Climate Risk Management in Central Asia" (GIZ).
GIZ is a successful project that is part of the regional climate and security initiative "Green Central Asia" of the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The aim of the project is to improve the management of cross–border climate and disaster risks in Central Asia.
The project advises catchment basin councils, Emergency and Disaster Risk Reduction Centers and other stakeholders in order to develop the capacity to reduce transboundary water-related climate risks. The meeting was attended by representatives of Central Asian countries and GIZ country directors.
The purpose of the meeting is to provide information on the status of the program implementation, approve the list of interstate rivers for climate risk assessment and review models for hydrological modeling.
On the second day of the meeting, the experience and practice of managing transboundary climate risks and disaster risk reduction in Central Asian countries were discussed. Director of the Center Serik Aubakirov made a presentation on the activities of the Center for Emergency Situations and Disaster Risk Reduction and the regional early warning system for multiple emergencies. The regional program "Climate Risk Management in Central Asia": A brief description of the program, expected results and main tasks was presented by Sergey Makarov, Head of the GIZ program in Central Asia.
The participating countries made reports and presentations on the topic "Experience and relevant practices in managing transboundary climate risks and disaster risk reduction in Central Asian countries". Kazakhstan was represented by the Director General of RSE "Kazhydromet" Danara Alimbayeva.
