On July 4-6, 2023, the WMO held the Second Global Online Seminar on Regional Centers for the Integrated Global Observing System of the WIGOS (RCI). The mandatory functions of the RCI are defined as metadata management and data quality monitoring. Each RCT performs only one of the functions.
The purpose of the seminar is to gather representatives of WMO Members who have hosted regional Integration Centers (RCIS) and identify countries for new RCIS. One of the main issues was the analysis of the experience of the existing RCIS and the problems associated with the creation of new centers, as well as the performance of functions in the field. Particular attention was paid to improving the sustainability of their activities, including feedback on the use of the tools of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System.
Earlier in March 2023, a seminar was held in Geneva, Switzerland with the participation of hydrometeorological services of countries that expressed a desire to act as Regional centers for an integrated global observing system. These are Kazakhstan, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey. Then an introduction to the functions and tools of the IGSNV and RCI was conducted. Today's seminar is aimed at consulting and identifying potential countries for the placement of RCI.
