From July 6-7, 2023, in Paris, France, we are holding an event to implement a regional project to strengthen the resilience of Central Asian countries by providing opportunities for regional cooperation to assess high-altitude glacial systems in order to develop integrated methods for sustainable development and adaptation to climate change. The new project aims to increase general knowledge about the cryosphere (glaciers, permafrost and snow cover) and the regions affecting the lower reaches, as well as to strengthen glacier and permafrost monitoring systems in Central Asia. The meeting is being held at UNESCO headquarters.
The participants are representatives of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, RSE "Kazhydromet", the Institute of Geography and Water Security and the Central Asian Regional Glaciological Center.
The main purpose of the meeting is to present and approve the project strategy to stakeholders and discuss any changes in the overall context that may affect the project strategy and its implementation. To provide experts with an opportunity to exchange updates and input data based on their knowledge of the systems of formation of snow glaciers and runoff (glacial nival and permafrost), climate change and its variability, especially for the two glacial systems (Pamir and Tien Shan) and river basins that these glacial systems provide with water resources of the country located downstream.
