In 2022, the National Hydrometeorological Service of Kazakhstan celebrated its centenary, but continuous observations began earlier, since the middle of the nineteenth century and were registered at Kazalinsk station in 1848, Semipalatinsk in 1854, Irgiz and Kyzyl-Orda stations in 1856, Alma-Ata and Uralsk in 1859. At the moment, Kazhydromet RSE has 35 meteorological stations and hydro posts that have been continuously operating and conducting round-the-clock observations for more than 100 years.
In 2017 and 2020, the Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) included 14 meteorological stations of Kazakhstan in the world list of centennial observation stations: Akkol, Aral Tenisi, Atbasar, Irgiz, Kazaly, Mikhaylovka, Turkestan, Fort Shevchenko,Merke", "Kokshetau", "Aktobe", "Torgai", "Semiyarka" and "Zharkent".
In May 2023, the WMO included 7 more weather stations and hydro posts in Kazakhstan in this list: "T.Ryskulova aul", "Esik", "Pavlodar", "Taraz", "Yavlenka" and hydro posts "Fort Shevchenko" (marine) and "Kushum" (river).
In July 2024, the meteorological station with the production of hydrological observations "Syrdarya River – Kazaly city" was recognized as a long-term observation station.
To date, 22 out of 35 Kazakhstani long-term surveillance stations have been recognized by the WMO. Work on turning on all weather stations will continue.
