On September 18-19, 2024, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted a two-day international training for forecasters on satellite meteorological data and their application, WMO-CIMSS Forecaster Training on Satellite Meteorology Data and Applications. The event was organized by the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management in cooperation with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Research (KIMSI).
The training was attended by representatives of WMO, young scientists and students of KazNU and leading universities of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, as well as employees of the National Hydrometeorological Service of Kazakhstan.
The classes were conducted by Tim Wagner, a researcher from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the USA, and Natalia Donohova, head of the Department of Space Systems and Use of WMO.
On the first day of the training, the specialists immersed themselves in satellite meteorology, the study of clouds, precipitation and fire science. The second day was devoted to hydrology, topical topics of floods, floods and flood detection from satellites. Upon completion of the training, the seminar participants visited the branch of Kazhydromet in Almaty and the Almaty region.
