In the third decade of January, in the south-east of the republic, in areas where winter crops were cultivated, the temperature background was above normal by 2...5 °C, in the south of the republic below normal by 1...2 °C. Precipitation was mostly higher than the annual average, but only in some areas of the south it was about normal. In the south-east, winter crops were still in a state of winter dormancy, in the south, due to prolonged warm weather at the end of the decade, vegetation of winter crops was possible during the daytime.

In the observed areas of the Almaty region and the Zhetisu region, during periods of cold weather, the minimum air temperature dropped to minus 20... 25 °C, in some places (up to minus 29 °C) and the minimum soil temperature at the depth of the winter wheat tillering node (3 cm) dropped to minus 6 °C. The soil is frozen to a depth of 30 cm to 57 cm. The height of the snow cover increased to 22-37 cm, in the vicinity of the Sarkand weather station in the Zhetisu region to 60 cm. The height of the snow cover in these areas was sufficient to protect crops from frost.

In the areas of winter grain cultivation in Zhambyl region, the average air temperature was minus 4...5°C, which is 1°C higher than normal, in the south the average air temperature was minus 1...3°C, which is 1...2°C lower than normal. The minimum air temperature dropped to minus 11...17 °C in places (minus 18...24°C) and the minimum temperature at the depth of the winter wheat tillering node (3 cm) dropped to minus 2...8 °C. The height of the snow cover increased to 3-9 cm, in some places to 15-24 cm, in some areas of the south the snow has melted. The soil was frozen to a depth of 16-32 cm (53 cm in some places), in the south of the country, in most areas, the soil was thawed. In fields where there is no snow cover in the surface layer, the leaves of winter crops may dry out, which may somewhat complicate the start of winter crop growth in spring.

As of January 20, the determination of the viability of winter wheat in the West Kazakhstan, Turkestan and Zhetisu regions has not been established in the observed areas of damage to winter crops. According to the results of the viability determination, the percentage of dead plants in the Zhambyl region in the vicinity of the Kulan meteorological stations averaged 8%, Tolebi – 13%, Merke – 7%, Sarykemir – 4% and Nurlykent – 12%, no plant damage was noted at the remaining observation points.

The agrometeorological conditions in the south and south-east of the republic for winter wheat wintering were quite satisfactory. Low air and soil temperatures, which are dangerous for wintering crops, were not observed.

In the last decade of December, cattle grazed on individual pastures in Aktobe, Atyrau, Almaty, Kyzylorda, Mangystau and Turkestan regions and the Zhetysu region. The animals are kept in stalls in the Alginsky and Irgiz districts of the Aktobe region, in the Kaztalovsky, Syrymsky and Zhanybek districts of the Western-
