On August 12, the countries sharing the shores of the Caspian Sea celebrate Caspian Sea Day, a date designed to remind of the importance of preserving the unique ecosystem of the world's largest enclosed body of water.
The Caspian Sea Day is aimed at raising awareness among the public and other stakeholders about the environmental problems of the Caspian Sea and
ways to solve them, and is the main mechanism for their involvement in the protection of the marine
environment of the Caspian Sea.
Caspian Sea Day was established on the initiative of Iran and with the support of all the participating countries of the Tehran Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea. The Convention entered into force on August 12, 2006 and became the first legal instrument aimed at the integrated protection of the marine ecosystem.
