The President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Dr. Al-Mandous, accompanied by an official delegation, paid a working visit to the National Hydrometeorological Service of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The guests got acquainted with the key areas of activity of the NGMS of the Republic of Kazakhstan — from observation systems to the issuance of various types of forecasts: synoptic, hydrological, agrometeorological, as well as forecasts of adverse meteorological conditions (NMR) intended for the population and government agencies.
Of particular interest were also the laboratory of environmental monitoring and the Kazhydromet Museum, which presents unique exhibits reflecting the history of the meteorological service of Kazakhstan.
During the visit, a bilateral meeting was held, at which the following issues were discussed:
• Kazakhstan's participation in the implementation of the WMO global initiative "Early Warning for All" and the development of a national warning system;
• The role of the NGMS of the Republic of Kazakhstan as the regional center of the Rapid Flood Forecasting System (CarFFGS);
• It was noted that the NGMS of the Republic of Kazakhstan is actively involved in the implementation of the HydroSOS initiative, within which they presented the development of a methodology for long-term hydrological forecasting. It was emphasized that the Service will continue to work purposefully to improve the methods of hydrological forecasts, ensuring their even greater accuracy and practical applicability.;
• Plans to establish a WMO Integrated Processing and Forecasting System (WIPPS) Center in Kazakhstan;
• Contribution of the National Migration Service of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the activities of the WMO Expert Group on Climate Data and the development of international cooperation in the field of climate information exchange.
Special attention was paid to the prospects of joint projects with the UAE National Meteorological Service, including training specialists, conducting research on active effects on cloud processes as part of the implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation and studying dust storms.
Following the visit, the parties confirmed the importance of further strengthening partnership and emphasized Kazakhstan's leading role in the development of regional and international cooperation in the field of meteorology, hydrology and climatology.
The President of the WMO, Dr. Al-Mandous, emphasized the high level of professionalism of the NGMS of the Republic of Kazakhstan and noted Kazakhstan's significant contribution to the development of international cooperation within the framework of the World Meteorological Organization.
