On March 27, the Center for Strategic Planning and Operational Management of the Ministry of Emergency Situations hosted a briefing on the current flood situation in Kazakhstan. The speaker was Asset Zhilkaidarov, Deputy Chairman of the Emergency Prevention Committee of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The briefing was also attended by Nurgalym Serikbai, Director of the Department of Hydrology at Kazhydromet RSE, and Yerlan Zhumabayev, representative of the Ministry of Water Resources. As of today, about 92% of flood prevention measures have been completed. Since the beginning of March, an operational headquarters has been operating, which monitors the situation around the clock and coordinates services. Dams have been strengthened in the regions, riverbeds have been cleared and drainage systems have been put in order. Thanks to this, it was possible to increase the protection of settlements and reduce the risks of flooding. In the south, the active flood phase has already subsided, and the peak is now observed in the West Kazakhstan and Aktobe regions. Since the beginning of the period, flooding has been recorded in the Abai region, but today they have been eliminated. There were overflows on the roads, some remain under control. The situation is under constant monitoring, including from the air. All forces and equipment are ready to respond. Kazhydromet RSE issues weekly hydrological forecasts and promptly transmits information to the Ministry of Emergency Situations and other government agencies.
