From April 20 to 24, 2026, the National Hydrometeorological Service Kazhydromet, together with the World Meteorological Organization, is conducting a regional training for forecasters from Central Asian countries, as well as a meeting of the Steering Committee of the Rapid Flood Risk Assessment System (CARFFGS).
The CARFFGS system is designed to assess the risk of rapidly developing floods and plays an important role in ensuring public safety. It generates operational information based on meteorological data, hydrological models and forecasters' practices, which allows timely measures to prevent and reduce damage.
Kazhydromet is a Regional Center for Central Asia within the FFGS system. In total, there are about 16 such centers in the world that ensure the coordination and development of the system at the regional level.
The main purpose of the training was to improve the professional skills of specialists in using the CARFFGS system, improve flood forecasting methods and develop unified approaches to risk assessment and the issuance of storm warnings.
During the Steering Committee meeting, participants discussed the further development of the system, strengthening cooperation between hydrometeorological services and emergency management agencies, as well as issues of ensuring its sustainable operation in the Central Asian region.
