The VS-43 Weight snow meter is designed to determine the density of snow cover. Knowing the density and height of snow, calculate the volume of moisture reserves in the snow cover.
The snow meter consists of a metal cylinder 60 cm high, a spatula and a scale. At one end of the cylinder there is a ring with cutting teeth, and the other end is closed with a lid. To measure the height of the cut-out snow column, a centimeter scale is applied on the outside of the cylinder; the zero of the scale coincides with the lower section of the ring. A ring with a handle that moves freely around the cylinder is used for hanging the cylinder to the scales. To balance the scales, a load is used that slides along the scale line.
Determination of the main characteristics of snow cover on landscape elements is performed on selected and fixed snow-measuring routes. On a 2 km route, specialists measure the height of the snow cover using a portable rail every 20 meters, and every 200 meters a snow sample is taken to determine its density with a snow meter. The calculation of moisture reserves also includes all the moisture in the layer from the soil to the snow cover. To do this, the thickness of the meltwater layer and the water-saturated snow layer, the thickness of the ice crust on the soil, and the condition of the soil under the snow cover are measured at the sampling site.
