Since September 2018, within the framework of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Kazakh-Uzbek Joint Working Group on Environmental Protection and water quality of the Syrdarya River basin has been established.
The task of the Working Group is to carry out cross-border monitoring, regular exchange of information on 28 indicators of surface water quality in the Syrdarya River basin, including pesticide concentrations.
Water sampling is carried out annually in 4 seasons (March, July, September, December) at 2 points on each side.
Over the past period, the specialists of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Uzbekistan visited each other to familiarize themselves with the activities of specialized laboratories that monitor the quality of water resources, determined the list of measurement methods used, the frequency and procedures for exchanging information.
Currently, 6 coordinated selections and analyses of the water quality of the Syrdarya River have been carried out.
Cross-border hydrological monitoring of the Syrdarya River
The RSE "Kazhydromet" and the Center of the Hydrometeorological Service of the Republic of Uzbekistan" have a "Program of cooperation in the field of exchange of hydrometeorological information and research activities", within the framework of which hydrological observations are carried out and information is exchanged daily on the level and flow rate of the Syrdarya River.
Kazakhstan is conducting this work on the Syrdarya River at the Kokbulak village hydrological post, located above the mouth of the Keles River, the hydrological post has been operating since 07.05.1976.
At the site of the hydrological post in the middle of the Syrdarya River, the state border passes. The right bank is located on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the left bank is located on the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
All work on cross-border hydrological monitoring and monitoring of the surface water quality of the Syrdarya River is carried out by Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan on the basis of mutual understanding, disagreements and discrepancies of results are not noted.
