83-year-old temperature record broken

In May 2026, several temperature records were updated in Kazakhstan at once. One of them lasted more than 80 years.
The beginning and end of the month in most parts of the country were characterized by dry and abnormally warm weather. At the same time, in mid-May, frosts of up to -1 were observed in the north, east and central regions at night...-7 °C.
New temperature maxima were recorded in several cities of the country. So, on May 1, the air in Pavlodar warmed up to 29.4 ° C, which exceeded the previous record of this day — 29.0 ° C, set in 2022.
On May 6 and 7, the air temperature in Zhezkazgan reached 33.1 °C and 33.8 °C, respectively. This updated the records of 2014 and 2001, when the maximum temperature was 31.3 °C and 31.0 °C.
On May 7, the temperature in Kyzylorda rose to 36.7 ° C, exceeding the previous record for this date, set in 2001 and equal to 35.0 ° C.
On the same day, a temperature of 32.1 °C was recorded in Taraz, which is higher than the 2015 maximum of 31.4 °C. In addition, on May 9, the air in the city warmed up to 31.8 °C, updating the record of 2024 — 31.3 °C.
The record set on May 31 in Petropavlovsk was particularly noteworthy. The air temperature reached 35.0 °C, exceeding the 1943 figure of 33.6 °C. Thus, the record lasted 83 years.
On the same day, the maximum temperature in Karaganda was 33.7 °C, which is higher than the previous record of 1952 — 33.0 °C.
